ART AND CULTURE (40h)

The objective of the course is to present the major trends of European culture and art in the historic perspective, from the ancient Greek and Roman periods, through the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and modernism, till the most recent postmodern times. The aim is also to develop the students’ skills of creative and analytic thinking, alongside their artistic sensitivity.

The course will consist of lectures, presentations, seminars, accompanied by practical workshops, including visits to Cracow museums, art galleries, opera, ballet, as well as meeting Polish artists.

The following basic issues are included in the course curriculum:
1. Introduction to Cultural Studies (2 hours)
Various concepts of culture.
Philosophical bases of culture.

2. Foundations of Aesthetics (2 hours)
Various concepts of art and aesthetic values.
Methodology of art studies.
Classification of arts.

3. History of Poland in the Context of World History (16 hours)

4. History of European Culture and Art (20 hours)
Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome, Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque, Romanticism, Modernism, Postmodernism.
Outline history of Polish art.

4. Culture, Art and History as Envisaged in Museums (10 hours)
Main concepts, classification and history of museums. Presentation of major European museums.
Visits to Kraków museums.

5. The 20th Century Trends in Philosophy of Culture (10 hours)
Western views.
Polish outlooks.

6. Multifarious and Ethnic Aspects of Culture (4 hours)
